The Little Campbell Hatchery in South Surrey thrives as a place for community, learning and environmental stewardship.
The Little Campbell Hatchery is the first all-volunteer hatchery in British Columbia. Every year the volunteers count and identify approximately 5,000 salmon going upstream to spawn.
Since the hatchery opened in 1983, we have benefitted from the expertise and financial support from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. The hatchery’s breeding program annually raises and releases approximately 100,000 salmon each year. Over the past 40-plus years, that’s 4 million additional salmon released back into the river.
The hatchery is open to the public, and when the salmon are running our volunteers will be on hand to let you know what we do to increase the salmon population every year.
There is also a short, well-signed nature trail for the public to enjoy.
The grounds and hatchery are open year-round.

Little Campbell Hatchery Society
Our society was created with a clear purpose: to care for the Little Campbell Hatchery and share its importance with our community. Here’s what we’re all about:
- Caring for the Hatchery: We operate and maintain the Little Campbell Hatchery and its facilities in partnership with the not-for-profit Semiahmoo Fish and Game Club.
- Connecting with the Community: We invite the public to learn about and take part in the hatchery’s activities, which play a vital role in preserving and enhancing fish populations in the Little Campbell River.
- Inspiring the Next Generation: We’re passionate about education. From tours to hands-on activities, we provide fun and meaningful learning opportunities—especially for school children across the Lower Mainland.
- Protecting the River: We are committed to preserving the Little Campbell River as a healthy, fish-bearing waterway for generations to come.
- Building for the Future: We plan to modernize and upgrade the hatchery so it can continue its important work well into the future.
At its heart, our society exists to protect, educate, and inspire—all while ensuring the Little Campbell Hatchery thrives as a place for community, learning, and environmental stewardship. Visit our Little Campbell Hatchery Society website or join our facebook group.
